The Wedding of David & Samantha in Umbria, Italy

A trip to gorgeous Italy in September for the destination wedding of David & Samantha.

I took an early morning flight to Rome the day before the wedding and hired a car for the 3 hour drive north to my hotel in Umbertide, just north of Perugia, towards the Umbian and Tuscan border. I settled into my surroundings and felt wonderfully at ease with the Italian way of life.

Enjoying my gelato (against the law not to indulge when in Italy, right?) I wandered around the town and saw the locals enjoying games of cards outside cafe’s and having an early evening beer in the warmth of the setting sun. There is something seriously special about this country and nowhere more beautiful to be wed.

The wedding day arrived and I headed for Borgo Bastia Creti, an incredible venue. The entire wedding party were staying there so it was easy for me to photograph both the bridal and groom preparation.

The ceremony was in the town hall of the walled medieval village of Montone, roughly a 25 minute drive away on a hilltop. A typically Italian town with stunning architecture, surrounded by wonderful views of the Umbrian countryside. The town hall itself was glorious, a huge ceiling and ample space, filled with natural light from the big windows at the back.

After a drinks reception in the centre of the village, it was back to Borgo Bastia Creti. Guests were met with canapés on arrival, followed by a banquet outdoors, in the most gorgeous setting you’ve ever seen. Later, dancing to the band in the ivy covered courtyard, beneath the fairy lights.

The day was perfect, I loved every second that I was capturing it. Wall to wall sunshine with that perfect Mediterranean warmth all day (and night!) long.

I met the couple in the UK a few weeks before the day and they made it clear they weren’t particularly comfortable in front of the camera and didn’t like posing. As usual, that fits my style and I kept them as relaxed as possible and captured the genuine happiness and love they have for each other with next to no direction.

A small selection of my photographs from the day are below, please take a look.
