IS your groom a willing wedding planner or does he take a back seat and let you make all the decisions? If it’s the latter, perhaps it’s time you give him a nudge in the right direction, as the days of simply hiring a suit and getting to the church on time are long gone.

More than a third of weddings[i] are now planned jointly by the bride and groom. From creating a gastronomic feast for your guests and booking a rocking band, to perfecting his wedding day look down to the last detail – guys are getting more involved in their big day every year.

In 2017 the average cost of a UK wedding was £27,161[ii] – the highest it’s ever been – and with more couples paying for the big day themselves, rather than relying on mum and dad, is it any wonder men are taking more of an interest in the planning process?

But it’s not just the cost that has grabbed the guys’ attention. With everything you need for your wedding now readily available online, it’s easy to plan from behind a screen rather than venturing out to bridal stores and wedding fairs, which they may find intimidating.

Social media is also playing a much bigger part in wedding planning and it’s become commonplace for men to find inspiration on apps such as Instagram and Pinterest, spurred on by the efforts of grooms on TV shows such as ‘Don’t Tell The Bride’.

Photographer Rob Coombe recently married in Exeter, Devon, and was keen to put his own stamp on the big day.

“Although I wanted the day to be everything my wife wanted, I still wanted to have an input and put my own stamp on things. I was keen to have an input on the venue, the food, the music and the suits for myself and my groomsmen.

“I was really pleased with my suits, I managed to find exactly what I wanted and put my own mark on the flowers with a golf tee within the button holes. Working together on those decisions meant we achieved the perfect day for both of us.”

But sharing the planning also means sharing the stress. In a recent survey, 23 per cent of men[iii] said they found getting married the most nerve-wracking of major life events – putting their wedding above changing jobs, moving house and even having a baby in the stress stakes – while only 16 per cent of women said the same.

If your groom simply shrugs off every question about your big day, it could be because he’s feeling the stress just as much as you. Point him in the right direction to ensure he has all the help and advice he needs in the run up to your wedding.

Husband and wife team Zoe and Barry Cunningham, from Galway, launched their website Well Groomed in Ireland and the UK earlier this year to ensure men could get more involved in the wedding planning process.

They commented: “We got married in the UK in 2015 and found that there is very little information out there for grooms wanting to help plan their wedding.

“In days gone by it was traditional for the bride’s parents to pay for the wedding, so the men had very little input into ‘The Big Day’. However, nearly half of couples are now choosing to fund the wedding themselves, but men have still been left behind in the planning.

“This is not helped by the fact that most wedding websites are still purely geared towards the bride and her bridal party, with pink accessories, flowers and make-up tips. It got us asking, ‘What about the other half of the equation? What about the lads?’

“We aim to educate men to help them become confident, stylish and well-groomed grooms, proactive in helping to plan the wedding and starting off as they mean to go on by impressing their partner.
